I never leave home without a reliable point-and-shoot camera in the diaper bag with us. The few times I have forgotten it, I’ve kicked myself for missing some true Kodak moments (which is why I now own two cameras).
I am photographer that owns a heavy duty Nikon with all the dressings, and still use it when I am traveling to take professional shots, but often use a good point-and-shoot as well for the efficiency, ease, and size for snapping pictures of baby on the go. As of late 2010/ early 2011 I spent a lot of time researching good point-and-shoots for parents through online professional and user reviews. My criteria were that it had to be a camera that has really fast shutter speed and fast time between shots, takes great indoor, low-light photos, is good at capturing movement (since babies don’t hold still for cheese) has fun settings, takes good quality images, and got good reviews by parents.
These are the two cameras that I decided on. I own both, and use them both frequently for taking family/ baby photographs at home and while traveling, although I more frequently use the Canon. What do you use to take photos of baby?
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 14.1 is compact and pocket-sized with a versatile high-quality lens system with 24mm ultra wide-angle and a powerful 16x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 24-384mm). The lens system is also compatible with a high shutter speed of min.1/4,000 sec. The camera also has a low-frequency vibration hand-shake component, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed. It also has an easy-to-use video capability to take video clips. This is a camera that works great and that I use mostly as a back up to my Canon Powershot.
The Canon Powershot ELPH is a compact, thin, pocket-sized digitial camera with a 24mm ultra Wide-Angle lens and 5x Optical Zoom and Optical Image Stabilizer. It has an image processor that improves shooting in low-light situations without the need for a flash and full 1080p HD video with stereo sound. It has a high-speed burst mode and lowers noise levels at higher ISO settings. It’s a great reliable point-and-shoot that I have used to capture beautiful images of my daughter on print and on video (including capturing her first steps on video).
